With this release, version 2.0 is beginning to stabilize and become usable. There has been a significant improvement in language management, a new Dockerfile, and sequelize migrations are working again.

Okay, here we are, after about 250 commits, 591 modified files, 33,566 lines added, 32,873 removed and a lot of sweat, it's time to release an alpha version of this 2.0.

To be honest, there aren't any huge changes in terms of usage (well, there are a few), I tried to keep everything as backward-compatible as possible, so little has changed in terms of everyday use. So why all this work?

Simple: Nuxt 2, the framework on which Gancio is based, has been End-of-Life for over a year, and most of the stack had become obsolete. After all, Gancio is already 7 years old!

The problem is that the natural evolution to Nuxt 3 was anything but simple — Nuxt has not been exactly “backward-compatible” (to put it mildly), and every part of the application had to be rewritten from scratch. It was a mountain to climb, but a necessary one if we want to take care of this project for the future.

A huge thank you to NLnet for supporting this work, without which this rewrite would not have been possible. 🙏

Some details

The migration from Nuxt2 to Nuxt3 (technically Nuxt4) was not a simple upgrade, it required rewriting nearly every aspect of the application, from frontend to backend architecture and tooling.

The Nuxt documentation has a very substantial section on porting, but reading all the experiences of those who have already done similar work, everyone recommends starting from scratch, which is exactly what I did first on a temporary branch and then took the opportunity to move the main branch from master to main. Note that main will be the main branch from now on for the 2.0 and I will maintain the master branch for the old 1.x releases (do not expect many changes there).

Furthermore, nuxt4 has already been released this year, and since the update was not as disruptive as from 2 to 3, I decided to port directly to 4.

This work was part of a larger initiative to remove accumulated technical debt and establish a cleaner, more modern, and maintainable codebase across the full stack.

Key Changes

Frontend: Vue 3, Vuetify 3

Migrating from Vue 2 to Vue 3 involved adopting the Composition API and script setup, which required rewriting all components.

The structure and reactivity system have changed significantly, and many older patterns (mixins, options API) were replaced or removed.

As an example: the home/index page, which previously used Pug templates and data provided via asyncData, was completely rewritten using clean HTML and the Composition API.

I dropped Pug entirely in favor of native HTML templates, resulting in a cleaner structure.

This rewrite was also an opportunity to introduce TypeScript across the frontend and the backend.

The migration to Vuetify 3 was smoother, thanks to relatively strong backward compatibility. Some component props and event names have changed, but the UI library maintained a familiar structure overall.

Backend: Express -> Nitro / Sequelize

The migration from Express to Nitro (via h3) was the most disruptive backend change.

Express gave us explicit, centralized routing via .use(), whereas Nitro uses a file-based routing system where the path and method are inferred from the filesystem (e.g., /server/api/foo.get.ts) and some route params could not be backward-compatible due too some restriction in how nitro handle this -> https://github.com/nitrojs/nitro/issues/3518

This shift affected every aspect of backend development, including:

How we define and organize routes
How we access headers, query params, and authentication
How to upload files, send files, or set custom response headers
How we handle errors and exceptions

This was a necessary but painful transition and as a result, I start to write documentation to support future development and onboarding.

The ORM was upgraded from Sequelize 6 ➜ Sequelize 7, which brought structural changes:

Models now use class-based syntax exclusively and decorators.
Migration tooling is no longer included, it must be handled manually.
Some bugs and edge cases still exist (issue https://github.com/sequelize/sequelize/issues/17818)

This is an alpha!

This is an alpha release, there will still be many small bugs and there will probably be some changes to be made. Start experimenting, but don't use it in production yet. Some features are also missing:

Custom user localization

Breaking Changes

And yes, there are also some breaking changes, which I haven't been able to get rid of yet, but we can look at them in the coming months: I switched to a new authentication system using nuxt-auth-utils and this introduces a breaking change in session handling:

users will be logged out during the upgrade and must log in again.
any scripts or tools that rely on the previous session API may break and require updates.

OAuth support has been dropped for now to simplify the authentication flow.

A big thank you to everyone who collaborated on this release, especially @sedum, @MarekBenjamin, @knightRider0xD but also to those who keep maintaining the translations, this release introduces two new languages too, Slovenian and Danish. There is a new section on the site that suggests some guidelines to contribute and a new AUTHORS.md file in the repo so I don't forget anyone to thank (if you don't want to appear there contact me but consider that if you have contributed to the project that information is already public in other formats).

The notable things about this release are the ability to add images directly from a public url, the ability to allow admins and editors to opt out of receiving notifications for user registrations and events to be approved, the option to set the first day of the week by default, a plugin in beta to import events from ics feeds (the calendar format) as well as countless small bug fixes.

I would really like this to be the last minor release before 2.0 (the porting to nuxt3) so I would try to avoid new features (note that I will use the main branch as default branch for the 2.0).

Last but not least, I will be in some form at hackmeeting in italy, I hope with a talk, if you can come, it's a good self-management event, a great breath of fresh air and essentially the humus from which the ideas behind this project were born.
